Training on data journalism for young journalists

A training session on data journalism for 20 young journalists (8 Females and 12 males) was organized for young journalists who have spent less than 5 years practicing journalism. Participants gained basic skills in data journalism, statistics analysis and interpretation in line with news stories reporting as well as key statistics concepts, pitching stories from data in published reports, Data sources and storytelling using data visualization. As a result, the General public are being given facts-based information from statistical publications in a simple and understandable way and Journalists understand the meaning of statistics and how they are applied in people’s lives. Also, trained participants joined the existing network of journalists who report on data to continue to share experiences. The training participants have committed to report stories using different available data from different institutions, especially those from National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR). After the training every trainee was assigned to produce a story using data, and visualize through charts, maps, tables, or pie charts and 3 journalists who produced best stories were awarded.
