1. Introduction
In 2022 and 2023 Rwanda Journalists Association (ARJ) organized a training sessions focused on the implementation of disability inclusion at the grassroots level and the crucial role of persons with disabilities in socioeconomic development. The training aimed to equip journalists with the necessary knowledge and skills to report on disability-related issues accurately and inclusively.
2. Training Details

A total of 20 journalists, comprising 10 men and 10 women, participated in the training.
Session 2
Date: 10th August 2023
Organizer: Rwanda Journalists Association
A total of 20 journalists, comprising 11 men and 9 women, participated in the training.
3. Training Objectives
– To boost the quantity and quality of media coverage of PwDs Rwanda, with a specific focus on producing news reports, articles and stories that provide accurate and balanced portrayals of disability issues as a part of everyday life.
– To ensure journalists present disability issues in a way that promotes the dignity of PwDs as well as amplifying their voices and perspectives in a more accurate and balance manner;
– To enhance awareness, dispel negative stereotypes, and counter stigma and misinformation against PWDs to help change the narrative;
– To raise awareness of the role of persons with disability in socioeconomic development and influence people to respect their rights.
4. Training Outcomes
The training aimed to achieve several outcomes, including:
1. Increased Awareness: Journalists gained a deeper understanding of disability inclusion, recognizing the importance of promoting the rights and participation of persons with disabilities in society.
2. Enhanced Reporting Skills: Participants developed the skills to report on disability-related issues, ensuring accurate and sensitive coverage while avoiding stereotypes and misconceptions.
3. Increased Collaboration: The training encouraged networking and collaboration among journalists, fostering a supportive environment for sharing experiences, resources, and best practices in disability reporting.
4. Raised Public Awareness: By equipping journalists with the necessary tools, the training aimed to improve public awareness and understanding of disability issues, promoting empathy and inclusion within the broader community.
5. Lessons Learned
The training yielded several valuable lessons for the participating journalists:
– Challenging Perceptions: Journalists learned the importance of challenging societal stereotypes and biases surrounding disability, promoting a more inclusive narrative.
– Empowerment and Participation: The training emphasized the need to empower persons with disabilities and ensure their active participation in socioeconomic development, highlighting their skills, talents, and potential contributions.
– Sensitivity and Respect: Journalists recognized the significance of employing respectful and person-first language when reporting on disability-related matters, focusing on the individual’s abilities rather than their impairments.
6. Impact and News Stories
Following the training, the 40 journalists produced a remarkable total of 40 news stories that aired or were published across various media platforms. These stories covered a wide range of disability-related topics, including personal success stories, challenges faced by persons with disabilities, accessibility issues, and the importance of inclusive policies.
The news stories created a positive impact by raising public awareness, challenging biases, and promoting a more inclusive society. By amplifying the voices and experiences of persons with disabilities, the journalists contributed to breaking down barriers and fostering a more empathetic and inclusive community.
