PRESS RELEASE

Dan Ngabonziza Elected Chairman of Rwanda Journalists Association

Kigali, August 30, 2025 — Veteran journalist Dan Ngabonziza has been unanimously elected Chairman of the Rwanda Journalists Association (ARJ), the umbrella body representing journalists working in Rwanda. His election marks a new chapter for the Association, which plays a central role in strengthening professionalism, ethics, and media freedom in the country.

Ngabonziza, who joined the newsroom in 2005, brings nearly two decades of experience in journalism and media leadership. Over the years, he has witnessed the Association grow in both size and influence, driven by the commitment of its members and the leadership of past committees.
Addressing members after his election on Friday, August 29, Ngabonziza expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and outlined his vision for the Association’s next three years.

“Our mandate is clear. We must double the strength and impact of ARJ by building a financially sustainable institution, expanding opportunities for professional growth, and reinforcing our role as a bridge between journalists, government institutions, and the public. Above all, we must put journalists at the center of every initiative,” he said.

Currently, ARJ operates with three permanent staff members and relies primarily on donor-funded projects. The new Executive Committee, chaired by Ngabonziza, has pledged to pursue innovative income-generating ventures, strengthen partnerships, and ensure that at least 70% of Rwanda’s journalists benefit from training and capacity-building programs during their mandate.

Key areas of focus will include:
– Developing sustainable revenue streams to support ARJ’s activities.
– Expanding professional training and mentorship programs.
– Advocating for improved welfare and protection of journalists.
– Establishing structured dialogue with government institutions.
– Enhancing ARJ’s visibility through national and continental engagement.
The newly elected Executive Committee has been given a renewable 3-year mandate to transform ARJ into one of the strongest media associations on the continent.
